Two years have passed since Carmen López won the bronze medal at the Third International Pickleball Tournament in the Netherlands. It was an historic achievement for the sport, because Carmen was the first person with Down syndrome who participated in an international tournament and won a medal.
Since then, a lot of good things have happened. At the beginning of this year (2020), Carmen was awarded in the second edition of the Sports Women Gala held by the Madrid City Council. The event celebrates the talent of athletes who have become mentors for girls and young people; an award that also incorporates a special recognition of the sports promotion work carried out by the Madrid Alas Foundation, the organization that accompanies Carmen in her day to day life. The Madrid Alas Foundation has been working since 1978, supporting the life projects of people with intellectual disabilities, whom a vast majority are women. Little by little, the name of the foundation resonates throughout the world for being an example in promoting inclusive sport.
Becoming an example requires constant effort, and much of this has been promoted by Concha Delgado, Carmen’s teammate and coordinator of the Foundation’s activities area. Since Concha discovered pickleball she realized that the playing conditions were inclusive enough that it didn’t need to be adapted. From that moment, Concha has not known a more inclusive sport. Four years have passed and pickleball has become part of the Foundation’s sports line DNA, with a club that plays every week, and also participates and promotes the most inclusive part, training instructors to help spread the practice of this sport. Thanks to Concha, Carmen and others have discovered a passion and a way of feeling proud of themselves.
Carmen is an exciting example who has highlighted the value of pickleball as an opportunity for social inclusion. For this reason, Carmen and Concha received ambassador certificates from IFP last year, and in November Carmen received a tribute from the Madrid Pickleball Association, which nominated her for Honorary President of the Association. As if this was not enough, thanks to the work and achievements of Concha and Carmen, the World Pickleball Federation is making a donation to the Alas Fundation with the aim of continuing to promote the sport in Spain.
Despite the good news this year, pickleball tournaments that were marked with so much excitement on international calendars have been suspended. But a few weeks ago Carmen and Concha received great news to close the year. The Zcebra Wild Pickleball brand has offered to sponsor them! This news comes as a Christmas gift, to culminate a stage of achievements that is still open. Zcebra’s sponsorship decision includes no conditions beyond using their equipment and paddle and wearing their logo gear in matches. Carmen and Concha’s gear incorporates logos of both the Zcebra brand and Madrid Alas Fundation, highlighting an unprecedented collaboration. (PIC?) They have already showcased their attractive attire and gear at the Christmas tournament!

Han pasado ya dos años desde que Carmen López ganara la medalla de bronce en el Tercer Torneo Internacional de Pickleball en Holanda. Y fue un hito histórico para el deporte, porque Carmen ha sido la primera persona con síndrome de Down que, además de participar en un torneo internacional, se ha hecho con una medalla.
Desde entonces han pasado muchas cosas buenas. A comienzos de este año, Carmen fue galardonada en la segunda edición de la Gala de Mujeres Deportistas celebrada por el Ayuntamiento de la ciudad de Madrid, un evento para visibilizar el talento de mujeres deportistas que se han convertido en referentes para niñas y jóvenes; un galardón que además incorpora un especial reconocimiento al trabajo de promoción del deporte que ha llevado a cabo la Fundación Alas Madrid, la organización que acompaña a Carmen en su día a día. La Fundación Alas Madrid es una entidad que trabaja desde 1978 apoyando los proyectos de vida de personas con discapacidad intelectual, en su inmensa mayoría mujeres. Poco a poco, el nombre de la fundación resuena a lo largo y ancho del mundo, por ser un ejemplo a la hora de promocionar el deporte inclusivo.
Pero convertirse en ejemplo requiere de un esfuerzo constante, y gran parte de este lo ha promovido Concha Delgado, la compañera de equipo de Carmen y coordinadora del área de actividades de la fundación. Desde que Concha descubrió el Pickleball se dio cuenta de que las condiciones de juego eran lo suficientemente inclusivas como para no necesitar ser adaptado. A partir de ese momento Concha no ha conocido un deporte más inclusivo. Han pasado cuatro años y el Pickleball se ha convertido en parte del ADN de la línea deportiva de la fundación; ahora no sólo cuenta con un club que juega cada semana, también participa en la formación de monitores aportando un temario de inclusión, que ayuda a difundir la práctica de este deporte tan inclusivo. Gracias a Concha, Carmen ha descubierto una actividad que le apasiona y una forma de sentirse orgullosa de ella misma.
Carmen es un refente ilusionante que ha puesto de manifiesto el valor del Pickleball como una oportunidad de inclusión social. Por ello Carmen y Concha han recibido también el certicado de Embajadoras de Pickleball de la IFP y el noviembre pasado, Carmen recibió un homenaje por parte de la Asociación Madrileña de Pickleball, que le otorgó el nombramiento de Presidenta de Honor de la Asociación. Por si esto fuera poco, la World Pickleball Federation quiere hacer una donación a la Fundación Alas Madrid con ánimo de seguir impulsando este deporte en España, y Concha y Carmen parecen tener algo que ver con eso.
A pesar de las buenas noticias, este año se han suspendido los torneos de Pickleball que estaban apuntados con tanta emoción en los calendarios internacionales. Pero hace unas semanas Carmen y Concha recibieron una gran noticia para cerrar el año: ¡la marca Zcebra Wild Pickleball les quiere patrocinar! Una noticia que llega a modo de regalo navideño, para culminar una etapa de logros que todavía sigue abierta. Zcebra ha decidido patrocinar a la pareja de deportistas sin ningún tipo de condición, más allá de utilizar su equipación y pala en los partidos. En el traje deportivo de Carmen y Concha comparten tela el logotipo de la marca y de la Fundación, poniendo de relieve una colaboración inédita para ellas. El otro día ya estrenaron su nuevo equipo en un torneo navideño. Y los que les quedan.
